Travel Information: by train
By train and public transportation
Cologne has two major railway stations: Central and Tradefare Deutz. If you
have the booking option use Tradefare Deutz as it is on the correct side
of the river already. There are also many ICE services to
Tradefare Deutz.
After leaving the train you have to follow the
signs to find the local trams. Since
these signs are not always visible and there are several exits from the stations
the following description should assist you.
Please refer to the following schematic figure:

1. Getting to Bensberg terminal station of tram 1
1.1 Train arrival at Cologne Central Station (Köln HBF)
- After leaving the train on the platform get one level down and
walk in the direction of the cathedral (inside the station).
Do not get outside the station building.
The entrance to the underground (U-Bahn) is in the "cathedral nearest corner"
of the building.
Please refer to the following schematic figure:

- Go one level downstairs follow the path (left) and turn right to take
the stairs to get another level down. This is the platform for trams
16 and 18 (among others) heading for Neumarkt. They are servicing every few minutes.
Take a 16 or 18. Neumarkt is the second station.
- Get off at Neumarkt and leave the
underground in the opposite direction you were arriving with the tram. Get
one level upstairs, turn left, and get another level upstairs.

The platform of tram 1 (among others) is in front of you. Service is every 10-15 minutes.
(After getting outside do not cross any railways.)
Take the tram heading for Bensberg. There are also trams of service 1 which do
not proceed to the final station Bensberg. So be sure to use one having Bensberg
on its destination sign. Stay on the tram until you reach the final (underground) station.
The ride takes about half an hour.
Alternatively, you could take a local trade to Cologne Tradefare Deutz and proceed
from there. But be careful: Not every train stops at Tradefare Deutz.

There is an optional shortcut depending on your arrival on the
